For to you is the promise, and to you children, and to all that are afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him – Acts 2:39
“Wherever you go, the Church will follow you.” This is the statement that our most beloved Bava Thirumeni made during one of the meetings with Church officials many months ago. Now the Orthodox Global Online Sunday School (OGOSS) stands as a beacon of innovation and adaptability, reflecting the church’s commitment to nurturing its community irrespective of geographical boundaries. The initiative, envisioned by H.H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, is a response to the increasing diaspora of Orthodox families from Kerala and India.
Launched on 12th February 2023, OGOSS has, in a short span of one year, welcomed over 1000 students from more than 55 countries across five continents, including 22 states within India.
This rapid growth is a testament to the dedication and leadership of the OSSAE team led by Rev. Fr. Dr. Varghese Varghese, along with the concerted efforts of OGOSS Coordinators Prof. Dr. Cherian Thomas, Mr. Thomas Simon & Mr. Sherry Jacob Kurian and entire OGOSS team of dedicated teaching faculty.
The project team, formed following the Kalpana of H.H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews III on 7th January 2023, has been pivotal in spearheading this initiative. Their goal is to ensure that every child of the Orthodox faith has access to the Orthodox Faith and Holy Tradition, no matter where they reside.
With over 90 highly committed Sunday School teachers from around the world, OGOSS conducts over 60 classes every weekend covering students from Australia & New Zealand down south, Japan in the east to Hawaii, in the western hemisphere. OGOSS not only caters to the regular Sunday School students but also to senior members (18 years & above) of our church by conducting an exclusive batch of Grade X & Veda Praveen Diploma Course (Grade XI & XII combined) one-year online course. Below is the current schedule:
· 10:00am IST on Saturdays for children from Australia & New Zealand
· 10:00pm IST on Saturdays for children from Europe, UK, Ireland, USA, Canada & GCC.
· 05:00pm IST on Sundays for children from Far East, India, UAE & Africa.
· 08.30pm IST on Saturdays – an exclusive batch for senior members (19 years & above) for Grade X certification & Veda Praveen Diploma (Grade XI & XII) online one-year courses
The youngest OGOSS student is 3 years old and senior most student (in Seniors batch) is 67 years old.
OGOSS has been vibrant throughout the year conducting various events such as the Catholicate Day, Grandparents Day, Inter grade Annual competitions, Christmas, the Marthoman Heritage Assembly, and other online events of our liturgical calendar. OGOSS has an active social media presence on Facebook, and Instagram and has an exclusive YouTube Channel to inform and educate our young children on our Orthodox Faith and Tradition. The social media accounts are as follows: Facebook: Orthodox Global Online Sunday School; Instagram: orthodoxonlinesundaySchool & YouTube: OrthodoxOnlineSundaySchool.
As the OGOSS continues to expand its reach, it remains a shining example of the Church’s resolve to “follow” its members, providing spiritual guidance and education to its global family. We are deeply grateful to H.G. Dr. Joseph Mar Dionysius Metropolitan, President of OSSAE and Rev.Fr. Dr. Varghese Varghese, Director General for their constant guidance and encouragement. We also appreciate the efforts taken by all the OSSAE officials for their selfless commitment to make this initiative fruitful for our dear children.
It is indeed God’s providence that post-covid era presents a unique opportunity in the history of our Church especially for OSSAE to reach out to every child of our Church to learn our true faith and holy tradition taking advantage of the current technology advancements. We urge the parents who live remotely from our parishes to utilize this wonderful initiative of the church. Let us commit ourselves to ministering to the next generation and not miss a single child of our church in this noble endeavour.
